Commercial Horticulture Grow Bulbs

To evaluate lighting performance related to plant growth, two key metrics are used: photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD).

PPF provides information on total photon flux (in micromoles per second - µmol/s) within the spectral region (PAR) that affects plant growth. Assuming the manufacturer provides it, this is one objective metric that can be used to compare different light sources designed for horticultural applications.

PPFD provides information on the total photo flux in a certain area. This metric tells you how much light can be absorbed by the plant. PPFD is measured on site with a spectral light meter. Multiple measurements must be made in different areas to attain a true indication of the uniformity of light density for a particular light source.
