UHP and P-VIP part numbers are high pressure bulbs, usually mercury arc, with an internal pressure of over 3000 lbs per square inch. Originally developed by Philips in 1995, it is a common light source for digital data / video front projectors and rear projection televisions because it has very high light output available for the small environments of micro display projectors.
The main characteristics of UHP and P-VIP lamps designed for most digital projection applications are:
- Short arc
- Very high luminance
- Long lamp life
(2000 to 3000 hrs)
- High luminous efficacy
- Precise color spectrum
- Optimized reflector configuration
Most LCD / DLP projectors and rear projection televisions use high pressure bulbs. The bulb is mounted in a housing or cage. The bulb + cage is usually referred to as the "lamp".
UHP and P-VIP bulbs were very often the original bulbs mounted in the cages that shipped with the projectors and RPTVs.
