LED's are good "directional" light sources
LEDs produce highly directional light distribution. That is why they have proved very effective for use in flashlights. Their directionality also makes them good candidates for accent, flood and spot lighting applications. MR16 and PAR bulbs are logical opportunities for LEDs as replacements for halogen where dimming is not required.
What are the economic and environmental benefits of LED floods and spots?
LED MR16s and LED PARs have a high "first cost" compared to standard halogen equivalent bulbs. Does it make sense to use them?
Example Analysis
Costs: A 6W LED PAR20 bulb that costs $90 with a 25,000 hour rating is equivalent economically to a 20W Halogen PAR20 bulb that costs $9 and has a 2,500 hour rating. Assuming the bulbs all reached their rated life, it will take 10 halogen bulbs to reach 25,000 hours achieved by one LED bulb. The bulb costs over the 25,000 hour time frame are the same for both LED and Halogen - $90.
Benefits: reduced maintenance costs with LEDs (one light bulb change for the LED, ten light bulb changes for the Halogen); less energy used with LEDs (6 watt LED x 25,000 hours compared to 20 watt Halogen x 25,000 hours).
