Shed light on hard-to-find bulbs
Ever need a lightbulb not carried at your local hardware or home retailer? Just about everyone has at some time. And that can run from the prosaic refrigerator light to a bulb for a doctor's surgical light.
Luckily, a Chicago catalog lighting supplier, Gray Supply Co., began Topbulb.com in 1999 to market its huge inventory of lightbulbs to consumers nationwide.
"We got all over the search engines and peppered them with the product terminology, so a user could find our site through various portals," said Philip Bonello, president.
Topbulb has 3,500 to 4,000 kinds of bulbs, so Bonello could say to say of a recent caller who asked for a bulb for a helicopter spotlight: "We will track it down for him. I am sure we will."
More people ask for weird light-fixture bulbs, projector bulbs and bulbs for medical and dental office equipment ( LCD replacement bulb, shown above, $305; Overhead projector bulb, shown below, $16).
